Painter Nguyen Tu Nghiem (1922) was famous for lacquer paintings, oil paintings and pigments. He was one of 4 legendary artists Phai – Sang – Lien – Nghiem.
Biography
He was born in 1922 in Nam Trung commune, Nam Dan district, Nghe An province. His father was Nguyen Tu Tai who passed the same examination as Nguyen Sinh Sac. He was a graduate of class XV (1941 – 1946) of the Indochina Fine Arts College. In the third school year, he won the first prize for the oil painting The Guard of the Temple of Literature on the Salon Unique exhibition (1944), thereby making a strong impression on Vietnamese artists.
During the French Resistance, he taught at the Resistance School of Fine Arts in Viet Bac. From 1959 to 1960, he became a lecturer at the Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts.

1948: First prize for the artwork The Phu Luu Guerillas on the National Resistance Fine Arts exhibition.
1957: Prize for the artwork The Calf on the National Fine Arts exhibition.
1975: Prize for the artwork Two Lacquer Plates on the Capital Fine Arts exhibition.
1985: Official Prize for the artwork The Ancient Dance I on the International exhibition of Real Fine Arts in Sofia (Bulgaria).
1987: Official Prize for the artwork The Ancient Dance II on the International exhibition in Hanoi.
1990: First prize for the artwork Saint Giong on the National Fine Arts exhibition.
1996: Ho Chi Minh prize in Literature and Arts (phase I).
